MY STUFF

Max Shteiman

If you recognize the smiling face, it’s because he’s added a daily dose of personality and intellectual energy to Downtown West Palm Beach over the summer months as DISTRICT’s gregarious Copy Editor. The brilliant Washington University student’s kaleidoscope of “main” interests include languages, literature, science, business, the arts, and the mysterious allure of sour gummy worms.

DON’T GET BETWEEN ME AND MY…

Iced coffee. Gotta have it first thing each morning. Without it, I’m more Min than Max. The more ice, the better. Go-to brews are Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts, but I’m always scouting for cool local options, like Johan’s Joe and Subculture.

WHERE YOU’LL FIND ME

I’ve been a movie junkie since the age of three when my parents first took me to a movie theater. The cool, dramatic darkness, plush seats and Harry Potter’s magic set the tone – for me to misbehave to the point where we were politely asked to leave. I really haven’t misbehaved since. I’m entranced by movies and movie-making, from script to set to theater. My favorites are those that move me emotionally in some way.

How do you solve a problem like Maria?

FAVORITE MOVIE

Easier to pick a favorite from each of the genres that I love: romance to horror to foreign films, or even horrifying foreign romances. But the winner is Pulp Fiction. The most brilliant screenplay of all time. I quoted it to my mom when I was 13 and was grounded for a week.

CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT THIS APP

My IMDb (Internet Movie Database) app is a daily dose of entertainment news – both film and TV. A close second is QuizUp that I was forced to delete because it distracted me 24/7. It’s a global trivia game that matches you with players around the world. I was once ranked in the Top 10 in the world in Oscars trivia. One of the proudest moments of my life. Bet you didn’t know that.

CHILLING

I’m a bookworm. Always have been. I compile a list of books I want to read throughout the year, and then work my way through them. My favorites are mystery thrillers with surprising twist endings.  The best one I’ve ever read is The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by the inimitable Agatha Christie. Still waiting for someone to surpass that plot twist. Maybe it will be me.

LIFE’S GREATEST CHALLENGE SO FAR

Attempting to limit myself to just one sour gummy worm at a time. My life is filled with failures on that score, which leaves a sour taste in my mouth.  But I remain hopeful for a sugar-coated future.
